Vinyl Fence Installation

Vinyl and PVC are the same fence. What changes from one quote to the next is the brand, the gate posts and who stands behind the install.

The stockade fence that came with the house is leaning into the hydrangeas again, two boards are gone where the dog pushed through, and you are done with staining. Family Fence in Bellmore sells its PVC as needing “virtually zero maintenance,” and for most people that is the reason to switch.

Vinyl and PVC are one product

Family Fence calls its line PVC and describes it as “100% pure virgin vinyl” made in the USA. Above All Fence in East Islip lists the same kind of panels under PVC.

Family Fence backs its white PVC fences with a limited lifetime warranty. If you want tan, a darker color or a wood grain look, Family Fence carries Illusions Vinyl Fence for colors and wood grains, and Above All has a wood grain PVC line.

Styles Long Island yards stock

Above All Fence names every PVC section it keeps in stock. The names help when you describe what you want to any installer.

What separates one vinyl fence from another

The brand and its warranty. Barrette Outdoor Living, the maker of Bufftech, gives a transferable limited lifetime warranty on single family homes for products bought after January 1, 2024. It covers peeling, flaking, rotting, chipping, cracking and blistering. It transfers once, to a second homeowner, and then runs 30 years from the first purchase. It has to be registered within 30 days of purchase.

What the warranty leaves out. The same warranty says labor is not included, and it does not cover damage from improper installation. That puts real weight on the installer’s own workmanship warranty, so get it in writing.

Wall thickness. Superior Fence & Rail, with locations in Freeport and West Babylon, says its vinyl is 43 percent thicker than the industry standard. That is one company’s claim. Ask every installer what profile thickness they use and compare.

The gate posts. Bufftech wants the pair of posts a gate hangs between reinforced, with a metal stiffener inside or rebar and concrete. A quote that does not say how is missing something, and the gates page explains why.

Not vinyl at all. Family Fence also sells SimTek, a molded polyethylene fence with galvanized steel in every post and panel that is made to look like stone or wood. Family Fence says it is rated for wind gusts up to 110 mph. It is a different product from vinyl, so compare it on its own warranty.

Questions for a vinyl fence installer

  • Which brand and which style name is going in? New York General Business Law section 771 says a home improvement contract has to describe the materials, including make and model.
  • Who registers the manufacturer warranty, and inside the 30 days?
  • What does your workmanship warranty cover, and for how long?
  • How will the gate posts be reinforced?
  • Who calls 811 before digging? New York 811 lists fence post holes as work that needs a call.
  • Is a permit needed for the height I want, and who files it?

Vinyl quotes that should worry you

  • No brand or style named anywhere on the paper.
  • No license number on the contract. Section 771 requires the contractor’s license number where one applies, and both Nassau and Suffolk license fence work.
  • A plan to start digging before the lines are marked.
  • A 6 foot fence on the property line in Brookhaven with no mention of a permit. The town’s fence diagram shows that height needs a building permit, while 4 feet does not.

Before you sign, run the company through our license guide, and if the gate matters to you, read the gates page.

How Bufftech says a vinyl fence goes in

  1. Mark the line

Call 811 before the first hole. New York 811 lists fence post holes as digging that needs a call, and PSEG Long Island says to call 2 to 10 business days ahead and the marking is free.

  2. Dig the post holes

Bufftech calls for holes 30 inches deep or to the frost line, about 10 inches across for a 4 by 4 post and 12 inches for a 5 by 5. Your local code sets the frost depth.

  3. Set the posts

Each post sits in concrete. Bufftech warns that a soupy mix is weaker, and wants the gate hinge and latch posts stiffened with aluminum or rebar and concrete.

  4. Hang the sections

Rails slide into the posts with about an inch of room at each end, which Bufftech leaves so the vinyl can expand. The gate goes in last, with its own clearances.

Worth pricing with a vinyl fence

  • Walk gate

Bufftech's install instructions say the hinge and latch posts must be solid, set with an aluminum stiffener or rebar and concrete. Those posts go in with the fence, so decide on the gate now.

  • Railings

Family Fence in Bellmore and Above All Fence in East Islip both sell PVC railings next to their PVC fence, so one visit can price porch or deck rails in the same white.

Vinyl fence questions

  1. 1.Is a PVC fence the same as a vinyl fence?

Yes. Vinyl fencing is made of PVC, polyvinyl chloride, and Long Island companies use either word for the same panels. Both of the local sites quoted on this page file theirs under PVC.

  2. 2.Does the manufacturer warranty cover the installation?

No. Barrette Outdoor Living, which makes Bufftech, leaves labor and bad installs out of its lifetime warranty. Ask the installer for their own workmanship warranty in writing. Above All Fence, for one, lists a one year workmanship warranty on top of the manufacturer's.

  3. 3.Can I get a color other than white?

Yes. Family Fence says the Illusions line it carries has the largest choice of colors and wood grain looks, and Above All sells wood grain PVC too. Family Fence notes that its limited lifetime warranty is on its white PVC fences, so ask how the warranty reads for the color you pick.

  4. 4.How deep do vinyl fence posts go?

Bufftech's instructions call for holes 30 inches deep or down to the frost line, whichever your local code requires, about 10 inches across for a 4 by 4 post and 12 inches for a 5 by 5.
